As an adoptive parent, you can’t always trust your intuition.
You might be misreading their emotional cues without even realizing it!
How do I know that?
I’ve been working with adoptive families for over 20 years. I’m a psychotherapist, adoption specialist and Korean-born transracial adoptee, wife and parent of two school-aged children. How we parent is personal and often emotionally-charged. We want to do right by our kids, but sometimes we aren’t aware of our impact. For example, we might think we’re reassuring them, when actually, they feel suffocated. Or, we might think we’re giving them more freedom and they feel abandoned. I’ve met with hundreds of adoptees. What they’re actually thinking, feeling and need is so often different from what we perceive.
Whether you’re the adoptive parent of a child, teen or young adult, this group is for you!
This is not just any Facebook group. It’s the community that you’ve needed!
A note about young adulthood… you might have thought your hardest years were behind you? Well, these days, young adulthood can seem like the new adolescence! And, in certain ways, it’s even more difficult because you don’t have the control, influence or information that your did in their younger years! Issues like launching, college, career, relationships, self-esteem, mental health, the list goes on. There’s still plenty to cover! Even if the teen years are behind you, the young adult years can often be challenging in ways you weren’t expecting!
It’s concentrated and focused, specific to the issues that are important to your family. Ongoing opportunity to ask questions, learn from the experiences of others, share resources and build community.
Programming includes monthly video informational sessions via Facebook Live and monthly Q & A sessions which will occur from Sept – June and accessible through the summer. Each Facebook Live session will focus on themes such as identity, unrescuing, school, mental health and birth parents.
One-time fee of $500.
Please e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will invoice you via e-mail. You can pay by credit card or send a check. (This group is included in the registration for the fall ATM group.)
If you are the parent of an adopted teen with mental health issues, and need more concentrated help and support, please consider the ATM group. Or, if you would like to schedule an individual consultation via Zoom or locally, happy to do that, as well.
